Conor Jackson's grand slam highlighted an eight-run first inning and Gio Gonzalez tossed seven scoreless innings as the Oakland Athletics cruised to a 9-1 home victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday.
Hideki Matsui had a two-run single and rookie Jemile Weeks added an RBI single and scored twice for Oakland, which sent 14 batters to the plate in the first inning.
Coco Crisp had two hits and scored a run as the Athletics took three of four from their American League West rival.
Staked to an enormous lead, Gonzalez (9-6) scattered four hits and struck out eight.
The early offensive onslaught chased Joel Pineiro (5-4), who permitted eight runs on four hits and four walks in just one-third of an inning.
Bobby Wilson had an RBI single and Alberto Callaspo had three hits for Los Angeles, which fell for just the sixth time in 21 games.
