Pinch-hitter Ramon Hernandez delivered an RBI double in the 13th inning as the visiting Cincinnati Reds blew an eight-run lead, but recovered to spoil the return of Albert Pujols with a 9-8 victory over the host St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.

Pujols went 1-for-6 with an RBI in his first game since he fractured his wrist on June 19.

St. Louis, which trailed 8-0 after five innings, tied the game in the ninth on Jon Jay's homer off closer Francisco Cordero.

The Reds erupted for five runs before making an out. Chris Heisey drove Jake Westbrook's first pitch of the game deep into the left field seats, Brandon Phillips tripled in two runs and Jay Bruce capped the outburst with a two-run homer. Heisey's blast was the major league's first homer of the season on the opening pitch.

St. Louis struck for two runs in the sixth and five in the seventh, capped by Pujols' RBI single. Pujols' wrist is not fully healed, but team officials said there is no risk he will damage it further.

Wednesday marked the first time since April 15 that the first-place Cardinals were able to field their regular starting lineup.

Daniel Descalso went 4-for-6 with two RBIs for St. Louis.
