Mat Latos gave up two hits over seven scoreless innings, and the San Diego Padres beat the visiting Chicago Cubs 2-0 on Monday.

Cubs pitcher Casey Coleman broke up Latos’ no-hitter with his one-out triple in the sixth. Latos (9-14) tied a career high with nine strikeouts, and he’s struck out at least eight batters in five straight starts.

Latos has allowed three runs or fewer in all but one of his 14 outings since the All-Star break. Heath Bell tossed a perfect ninth inning for his 43rd save.

Coleman (3-9) exited in the bottom of the sixth after giving up a solo home run to Will Venable and a run-scoring double to Cameron Maybin.

Starlin Castro, the Cubs' 21-year-old shortstop, singled to lead off the seventh for his 204th hit. Castro, who has reached safely in 38 straight games, is set to become the youngest player ever to lead the National League in hits.

San Diego, which recorded its 10th shutout, has won seven of its last 10 games.
