Ronny Paulino’s fifth hit of the game, a run-scoring double in the 14th inning, scored David Wright as the New York Mets avoided a three-game sweep with a 2-1 triumph over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday night.

Wright led off the decisive frame with a single off Kyle Kendrick (1-2) and advanced to second on a one-out single by Jason Bay. Paulino followed one-out later with a line drive into the left field corner.

New York entered the inning with 16 stranded runners and 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position after scoring just four runs in the first two games of the series.

Taylor Buchholz (1-0), the sixth New York pitcher, tossed two scoreless frames for the victory in a game that lasted 4 hours, 45 minutes.

New York’s Chris Young and Philadelphia’s Cliff Lee were locked in a scoreless pitchers duel until Carlos Beltran doubled home Wright in the fifth.

Young departed after seven brilliant innings but the bullpen couldn’t hold the lead. Jason Isringhausen walked two batters in the eighth and Ryan Howard greeted lefthander Tim Byrdak with a run-scoring single to left-center.

Young allowed just two hits and three walks with seven strikeouts, while Lee yielded a run and eight hits with five strikeouts in seven innings.
