Jason Vargas gave up four hits in his first career shutout and the Seattle Mariners belted three home runs for a 7-0 victory over the visiting Tampa Bay Rays Friday night.

Vargas (4-3), who pitched a season-low three innings in his last start, struck out four and walked one as Seattle improved to three games over .500 (30-27) for the first time this season.

The Mariners on Thursday hit four homers in a game for the first time since June 2007, and Justin Smoak picked right up where they left off with his fourth home run in six games in the first inning Friday. Adam Kennedy and Miguel Olivo went back-to-back in the fifth. All of them came off Rays’ starter Andy Sonnanstine (0-2), who has allowed 10 homers in 31 2/3 innings.

Sonnanstine came in with a 2.11 ERA at Safeco Field, the best of any park where he had pitched at least twice. He gave up a single, hit a batter and walked three (one intentional) in the third as the Mariners scored three to take a 4-0 lead.

The Rays, losers of four straight, have scored two runs in the last three games after producing 17 in the previous three.
