Nick Swisher's three-run homer in the eighth inning propelled the New York Yankees to a 10-4 road win over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday night.
Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano led off the eighth with back-to-back singles against Sean Marshall (3-2), putting runners at the corners. Swisher, who had singled home a run in the fourth inning, greeted new pitcher Chris Carpenter by driving a 2-0 pitch into the right-field bleachers.
The Yankees added three insurance runs in the ninth on four straight extra-base hits. Curtis Granderson sparked the final burst with an RBI triple.
Chicago had taken a 4-1 lead in the third inning when Alfonso Soriano hit a three-run homer against CC Sabathia (9-4), who allowed four runs on eight hits while working seven innings for the win. Sabathia struck out three and walked one.
Randy Wells gave up four runs on five hits in six innings for the Cubs, walking four and striking out three.
Brett Gardner hit a solo home run in the first inning for the Yankees.
