Robert Andino drove in the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning as the Baltimore Orioles eliminated the Boston Red Sox from the American League wild card race with a 4-3 victory on Wednesday.

Boston became the first team in history to fail to make the playoffs after holding a nine-game lead in September.

Andino's line drive popped out of the glove of sliding left fielder Carl Crawford, which allowed Nolan Reimold to score from second base and sent the Red Sox to their 20th loss in 27th games in September.

Boston was eliminated moments after Andino's hit when Evan Longoria's walk-off homer gave the Tampa Bay Rays a stunning 8-7 victory over the New York Yankees in 12 innings.

Reimold had delivered the tying run with a two-out double off Pabelbon (4-1), who suffered his third blown save in 34 chances.

Jon Lester appeared headed for his 15th win in as many decisions against Baltimore, allowing two runs on four hits in six innings.

Instead, the ace lefty wound up the season with three losses in his last four starts.

J.J. Hardy hit a two-run homer - his 30th - for Baltimore, which beat the Red Sox for the fifth time in seven games over the last 10 days.
