Robert Andino and Nolan Reimold homered as the Baltimore Orioles edged the host Boston Red Sox 6-5 in the opener of a doubleheader Monday.

It was Boston's third straight loss, and 10th in the last 12 games.

The Red Sox restored their two-game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League wild card race with an 18-9 victory in the nightcap.

Baltimore took advantage of back-to-back dropped balls by center fielder Darnell McDonald, who started in place of Carl Crawford (neck). McDonald's third-inning miscues, only one of which was ruled an error, led to a pair of runs as Baltimore grabbed a 2-0 lead and stayed in front throughout on the way to its fifth win in the last six games.

Jeremy Guthrie (9-17) picked up the win, going six innings while allowing four runs on 10 hits. Jim Johnson pitched a perfect ninth inning for the save.

Rookie Kyle Weiland (0-3) took the loss, allowing six runs - five earned - in 4 2/3 innings.

Trailing 6-2 after a fifth-inning solo homer by J.J. Hardy, the Red Sox cut the deficit to one in the seventh but couldn’t get the equalizer.

The Red Sox were denied a run when a line drive hit by David Ortiz off the right field wall was ruled foul. Dustin Pedroia was at third base at the time and was stranded when Ortiz later flew out.

McDonald homered and Adrian Gonzalez had two hits and two RBIs for Boston.
