Florida hammered Zach Duke for four runs in the first inning and Mike Stanton finished with five RBIs as the Marlins hung on for an 11-9 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday.
Logan Morrison got the Marlins going with an RBI single in the first and Stanton singled to bring him around before Wes Helms smacked a two-run double to close out the four-run frame. Florida added another run in the second with an RBI sacrifice fly from Gaby Sanchez.
Pittsburgh cut the lead to 5-2 in the top of the fourth before the Marlins answered with another four runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by a three-run shot by Stanton. It was Stanton’s 22nd homer of the year as he finished 3-for-5 at the dish.
Pittsburgh’s Ronny Cedeno hit a solo shot in the seventh inning before the club added three runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth to cut Florida’s lead to two. Third baseman Pedro Alverez was 4-for-5 with his 15th home run and five RBIs.
Florida starter Chris Volstad (12-9) went six innings, allowing two runs on six hits to pick up his third straight win. Leo Nunez worked the ninth to pick up his 30th save.
Duke (8-15) was chased after four innings allowing nine runs – four earned – on eight hits.
