Juan Uribe highlighted a nine-run second inning with two home runs and six RBIs as the San Francisco Giants broke out of their hitting slump with a 19-hit attack and posted a 13-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs.
Freddy Sanchez went 4-for-5 with an RBI while Buster Posey and Cody Ross also homered for the Giants, who had scored two runs or less in nine of their previous 13 games.
Already ahead 1-0, San Francisco battered Chicago starter Ryan Dempster in the second en route to its ninth win in 12 road contests. Uribe began the outburst with a two-run homer and finished it with his fifth career grand slam, completing his ninth multi-homer game in the majors and giving the Giants a 10-0 cushion.
With his power display, Uribe became the first Giant to homer twice in the same inning since May 7, 2007, when Bengie Molina accomplished the feat against the New York Mets.
Sanchez and Posey added RBI singles in the second while Jose Guillen was hit by a pitch twice and starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner recorded a pair of base hits. Posey belted a two-out solo shot in the third, Ross added another in the sixth and pinch-hitter Pablo Sandoval hit an RBI single in the eighth to cap the scoring for San Francisco.
Bumgarner (6-6) won for just second time in 11 starts, allowing seven hits and walking one in seven innings. The 21-year old, who had received zero runs of support in his previous three outings, struck out nine.
Dempster (14-11) was pounded for nine runs and seven hits in just 1 2/3 frames. The veteran, who had tossed 14 scoreless innings over his previous two starts, walked two, hit a pair and also uncorked a wild pitch.
Alfonso Soriano doubled twice for the Cubs, who had allowed three runs or fewer in each of their previous 11 games.
