Chris Narveson pitched 5 2/3 strong innings and helped his own cause with an RBI single as the Milwaukee Brewers topped the Chicago Cubs 4-3 on Tuesday.

Casey McGehee added a pair of RBIs and Prince Fielder chipped in two hits for the Brewers, who punched out 11 hits a night after going off for 26.

Narveson (9-7) entered the contest having allowed 23 runs in 25 1/3 innings over his last five starts, but had little trouble with the reeling Cubs, allowing one run on six hits while striking out six and walking one. The left-hander gave himself an insurance run in the fourth, singling to center to drive in a run and make it 3-1.

Thomas Diamond (0-1) pitched well in his major league debut for Chicago, striking out 10 while yielding three runs on seven hits in six innings. The right-hander was a first-round draft pick in 2004 but has had his career derailed by elbow problems.

John Axford allowed a run in the ninth but hung on for his 16th save.
