Charlie Morton tossed six strong innings to earn his first win of the season and the bullpen did the rest as the Pittsburgh Pirates secured a 4-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday.
The Pirates entered the series with the worst team ERA in the majors, but they have held the Cubs to two runs in each of the first two games of the series.
Morton, who came in at 0-5 with a 12.57 ERA, was terrific Wednesday, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out three and walking none.
Pittsburgh's bullpen trio of Evan Meek, Joel Hanrahan and Octavio Dotel followed up with scoreless innings apiece for the second night in a row. Dotel picked up his fifth save, striking out two in the ninth.
Pirates centerfielder Andrew McCutchen returned to the lineup after missing Tuesday's game with a sprained right ankle and went 2-for-4 with an RBI double. Garrett Jones had two hits and two RBIs and Ryan Church homered for the second night in a row, hitting a solo shot in the sixth for his second of the year.
Ted Lilly (1-2) took the loss for the Cubs, allowing four runs on nine hits over six innings.
Chicago shortstop Ryan Theriot went hitless in four at-bats, snapping his hitting streak at 13 games. Aramis Ramirez and Mike Fontenot drove in runs for the Cubs.
