Matt Holliday's ninth-inning single brought home the game's only run as the St. Louis Cardinals edged the Toronto Blue Jays 1-0 Wednesday night.

After the teams traded zeros over the first eight innings, the Cardinals finally struck in the ninth. Randy Winn hit a one-out single and advanced to second on a two-out hit by Felipe Lopez. Holliday followed with an RBI single to left field, bringing home Winn to give St. Louis the lead.

Toronto looked to rally in the bottom half of the inning, but Alex Gonzalez hit into a double play and Lyle Overbay grounded out with a man on first to end the game.

Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter (9-1) was masterful against his former team, scattering three hits over eight innings. He walked four and struck out seven.

Ryan Franklin pitched the ninth inning for his 14th save.

Kevin Gregg (0-3) absorbed the loss after allowing all three hits in the fateful ninth inning. His outing spoiled a strong performance by Jays starter Ricky Romero, who allowed eight hits over eight innings, walking one and striking out five.

Vernon Wells had two hits to pace Toronto, which has dropped three straight games.
