Brandon Morrow came within an out of throwing a no-hitter Sunday, settling for a complete-game one-hitter as the Toronto Blue Jays completed a three-game sweep with a 1-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Morrow (9-6) was unstoppable through eight innings, issuing just one walk while striking out 16. After Jason Bartlett flied out to center field to open the ninth, Morrow issued a four-pitch walk to Ben Zobrist before inducing Carl Crawford to fly out to left.

Evan Longoria was next, and smashed a ground ball that Aaron Hill deflected with his glove into shallow right field. After a brief moment, the official scorer ruled it a base hit, breaking up the no-no after 8 2/3 innings.

Morrow completed the career-best effort by striking out Dan Johnson with runners on first and third to finish with 17 Ks.

Morrow fell just short of becoming the second pitcher in Blue Jays history to toss a no-hitter. Dave Stieb turned the trick in 1990 after losing two previous attempts after 8 2/3 innings, while Roy Halladay came within an out of a no-no back in 1998.

Morrow has now won four straight decisions, and hasn't lost since June 29. Toronto handed Tampa its first sweep since mid-May, and has now won five of its last six games.

Vernon Wells drove in the game's lone run with a first-inning single. He left the game later on after dislocating his toe on a catch at the center-field wall that helped preserve the no-hitter.

Andy Sonnanstine (2-1) was solid in defeat, allowing a run on three hits over 5 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out one, but couldn't prevent the Rays from losing their season-high fifth straight game.
