Danny Valencia's leadoff homer in the fifth was the only run for the Twins, who led runner-up Chicago by nine games in the American League Central going into the game.

Anderson (6-6) held the Twins to four hits, walked one and struck out five. Nick Blackburn (9-10) gave up three runs and eight hits in seven innings, including Cust's leadoff homer in the sixth.

Andrew Bailey pitched the ninth for his 25th save in 28 chances. He walked Valencia with one out, but struck out J.J. Hardy on a 3-2 pitch and retired pinch-hitter Matt Tolbert on a groundout to end the game.

The A's scored in the second on Rajai Davis' sacrifice fly and again in the fifth on Mark Ellis' RBI single.

The Twins loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but Craig Breslow retired pinch-hitter Joe Mauer on a fly ball to left.
