Felipe Lopez’s walk-off single to center field capped a St. Louis comeback and earned the series win as the Cardinals edged the Angels in 6-5 in 10 innings on Sunday.

Angels reliever Scott Shields (0-2) walked Matt Holliday, hit David Freese and walked Yadier Molina before being lifted for Trevor Bell, who was brought in to face the pinch-hitter Lopez. Lopez looped Bell’s 1-1 fastball over the shallow-playing Torii Hunter in center field to win the rubber match of the interleague series for the Cardinals (26-19).

Ryan Franklin (3-0) pitched two scoreless innings to earn the win.

There would not have been extra innings if not for Freese’s eighth-inning heroics. After a double steal by Albert Pujols and Colby Rasmus, Freese hit a two-out, two-run single off Fernando Rodney to tie the game at 5-5.

The comeback spoiled a strong start by Angels starter Jered Weaver, who went six innings allowing three runs (two earned) while striking out eight.

Los Angeles (21-25) opened the scoring when Kendry Morales led off the second inning with his 10th home run of the season. The Angels extended the lead to 4-0 in the fourth when Mike Napoli hit a three-run shot, his third straight game with a homer. St. Louis countered with three of their own in the bottom half of the frame, courtesy of a two-run single by Molina and another run on an Erick Aybar error.

Anaheim extended the lead to 5-3 in the fifth on an RBI single by Bobby Abreu, the fifth run allowed by St. Louis starter Chris Carpenter.

Carpenter had his third straight sub-par outing, allowing eight hits and two home runs in six innings.

Albert Pujols went 0-for-3 Sunday, finishing the series hitless in 10 at-bats.
