Justin Verlander turned in his best outing of the season and rookie sensation Austin Jackson tallied three hits and an RBI as the Detroit Tigers dispatched the Los Angeles Angels, 5-1, on Sunday.
Alex Avila added a pair of hits and Miguel Cabrera drove in his major league-leading 27th run for the Tigers, who have won five straight.
Verlander entered the contest with a robust 5.53 ERA but showed no sign of his April struggles against the Angels, allowing one run on three hits and no walks while striking out seven in 8 1/3 innings to earn his second win of the season. The right-hander retired 23 batters in a row after allowing a two-out single to Torii Hunter in the first.
Detroit gave Verlander all the support he would need with a four-run fifth and tacked on another run in the sixth on Jackson's RBI single.
Jered Weaver suffered the loss for the Angels, surrendering four runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Los Angeles has dropped four of five.
