Trevor Cahill officially put the Chicago White Sox out of their misery as the Oakland A's posted a 7-2 victory on Tuesday night at the Oakland Coliseum.

Rajai Davis had three hits and Kurt Suzuki drove in two runs as the A's dropped the White Sox to their eighth-straight loss and officially ended their playoff hopes.

The loss combined with Minnesota’s win over Cleveland allowed the Twins to clinch the division. Chicago was tied for the American League Central lead with the Minnesota Twins as late as Aug. 11 before collapsing.

With the Texas Rangers' loss to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the Rangers magic number for clinching the AL West over Oakland remained at six.

Cahill (17-7), the sixth youngest pitcher in the AL, allowed a pair of runs and six hits with a walk and seven strikeouts in eight innings to improve to 12-2 at home this season.

The All-Star didn't allow a runner to reach scoring position until the fifth. He survived a four-hit frame the following inning and allowed just two balls in the air all night as he became the first 17-game winner for Oakland since Mark Mulder in 2004.

Davis led off the first inning with a single against Chicago starter Mark Buehrle (12-12) and Oakland scored later in the frame on a groundout by Suzuki. Davis started the third with a base hit and Suzuki provided a 2-0 edge with an RBI double. Cliff Pennington added a two-run double in the fourth and Daric Barton singled him home for a 5-0 bulge. Oakland tacked on two more in the eighth to cap the scoring.

Buehrle surrendered five runs and 11 hits as Chicago starters fell to 0-10 in their last 16 starts.
