Jake Peavy tossed a three-hit shutout and Carlos Quentin drove in the game’s lone run as the Chicago White Sox posted a 1-0 victory over the Washington Nationals on Saturday.
It was the fourth career shutout for Peavy (6-5) and his best outing of the season. The right-hander had his Thursday start pushed back two days because of discomfort in his shoulder and responded by striking out seven and walking two on 107 pitches.
Following a second-inning single, Peavy retired 20 straight batters in improving to 6-1 over his last seven starts against National League squads.
Quentin’s single in the fourth inning scored Omar Vizquel, who finished with a pair of hits. A.J. Pierzynski led the way with three of the team’s nine hits as Chicago won for the ninth time in 10 tries.
Washington starter J.D. Martin (0-3) remained winless despite a steady showing. He allowed one run on eight hits with six strikeouts in six innings.
Nyjer Morgan and Christian Guzman had the other two hits for the Nationals, who have dropped seven of eight.
