Shaun Marcum allowed just two hits over seven scoreless innings as the Toronto Blue Jays held off the Boston Red Sox, 3-2, on Wednesday afternoon.

Marcum (2-1) walked one and struck out six. Kevin Gregg allowed both Boston runs in the ninth inning but got Darnell McDonald to pop out to second base with a runner on first base to end the threat for his 10th save.

Travis Snider provided the offense for Toronto with three RBIs. Snider’s fifth-inning double scored Lyle Overbay, who led off the frame with a double, for the game’s first run. Snider then hit a two-run homer, his fifth of the season, in the seventh inning off Tim Wakefield.

Wakefield (0-2) allowed five hits and a walk while striking out five.

The Red Sox made things interesting in the ninth inning. Kevin Youkilis singled with one out to start the rally. J.D. Drew followed with an RBI double.

David Ortiz, who had both the hits off Marcum, was then called out on strikes for the second out of the inning. Ortiz disagreed with the call and manager Terry Francona was later ejected for arguing it.

Adrian Beltre then doubled to score Drew, cutting the deficit to 3-2 before Gregg retired McDonald.
